2004 Personal Achievement Award Winner

Betty White

Six-time Emmy award winner Betty White was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and came with her parents to Los Angeles when she was two years old. She graduated from Beverly Hills High School, appeared with the Bliss-Hayden Little Theater group in several productions, then gradually moved into radio.

In 1949 White joined disc jockey Al Jarvis in a local Los Angeles television program which was broadcast daily for five hours; she eventually took over the show. In partnership with producer Don Fedderson, Betty then produced a syndicated comedy, Life with Elizabeth, for which she received an Emmy in 1952.  She also appeared frequently on the major talk and game shows and became a regular on the Tonight Show.

White's first appearance on the Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1973-74 season brought tremendous response which led to a permanent cast role.  For the 1974-75 and 1975-76 seasons she received Emmys for her continuing performance as a supporting actress on a comedy series, portraying Sue Ann Nivens. Since that first Emmy in 1952, Betty has received that award five more times, twice for the Mary Tyler Moore Show, for the best daytime game show host on Just Men, and best actress in a comedy series for Golden Girls, and in 1996 for the John Larroquette Show.

In the summer of 1984, Betty White was honored on Ralph Edward's This Is Your LIfe.

Her lifelong interest in animals led to another of her own television series, The Pet Set - which she created, wrote, and hosted - featuring celebrities and their pets. Betty has also served on the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association Board of Trustees since 1974 and has recently been appointed by Mayor Richard Riordan to the new Los Angeles Zoo Commissioners.

Betty is the author of four books:  Betty White's Pet Love, Betty White in Person, The Leading Lady: Dinah's Story co-written with Tom Sullivan; and Here We Go Again: My Life in Television.

Betty has appeared in several movies for television, most recently starring with Leslie Nielsen in Chance of a Lifetime. Her latest endeavors on the big screen are Hard Rain with Morgan Freemand and Christian Slater, and Dennis the Menace Strikes Again playing Mrs. Wilson opposite Don Rickles. She also starred in a David E. Kelley movie called Lake Placid and a Rob Reiner movie called The Story of Us.

Betty was married for 18 years to television host Allen Ludden and now lives in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles with a shih-tsu, a golden retriever, and a Himalayan cat.
